In the peculiar world of a carnival-themed tactical game called Chess Gambit: chess roguelike, each playthrough starts with spinning reels, a randomly generated squad, and the choice of an opening gambit. Players place their chess pieces on perilous boards with unique rules: deploy your troops wisely, utilize your reserve, plan your moves, and capture enemy pieces before the board starts to crumble.
Victories earn you coins, which can be spent in the shop between battles to acquire new pieces, gambits, special tiles, and services. Occasionally, shopping is interrupted by fairground mini-games like the piece wheel, gachapon, or pachinko, offering unexpected prizes.
The board dynamically changes tactics: gold tiles award points, ice causes pieces to slide, portals shift positions, traps hinder enemies, and cracked cells or fuses can dismantle part of the table. A full run consists of five tables and culminates in a showdown with a final boss, each with unique abilities such as burning cells, moving first, copying losses, collecting souls, or turning your mistakes into their strength. Craft gambit combos to secure victory.

Begin a new game: the reels provide you with a team, after which you pick one of three initial gambits. Prior to each clash, position your pieces on the bottom ranks — either by dragging them with your cursor or finger, or by selecting a piece and tapping a square. Any unpositioned pieces will be sent to the reserve.
In battle, follow chess rules: take down enemy pieces and safeguard your king. When you select a piece, you'll see the allowed moves, with red squares indicating captures. Reserve pieces can be placed on highlighted squares in the back rank, unless the boss is blocking reinforcements.
Gambits on the right offer passive boosts or active actions — just click on a gambit to choose its target. Keep an eye on your coins, rounds, and the collapse timer, as the board can fall apart. Special tiles are important: gold tiles reward you, ice tiles cause sliding, portals move pieces around, and cracked tiles lead to collapse.
After victory, collect coins for the board, captures, and any remaining moves. In the shop, purchase pieces, gambits, special tiles, and services, or try your luck with the piece wheel, gachapon, and pachinko to win prizes. Clear five boards and vanquish the final boss at the fair.
