To save the princess, you need to get six keys which open the grate. However, keys are well-guarded by monsters. You have to shoot at these monsters to defeat them and get the keys. Cartridges for shooting can be bought for coins.
You can buy coins by clicking on the grid in the starting location. There are many teleports in the maze that lead to the starting point. If you run out of coins, you can get some more in the location marked with a heart.
